The Mishandling of Your “Work in Progress”

Ahhh… the old familiar phrase “a work in progress”.

How often I’ve blurted out this phrase on many of my past projects which I just knew we’re going to make me super rich!

Only to find that there was no work and definitely no progress. Just a bad phrase to say if you’re not doing anything really to accomplish your goals.

So I can say that I’ve truly mishandled this phrase on many of occasions. How about you?

Have you also thrown out this phrase as well when someone asks you about your ideas, your business or anything else that you were trying to accomplish?

It’s very easy to do… Let’s check out the dictionary definition:

a piece of work that is not yet finished

piece of workwork – a product produced or accomplished through the effort or activity or agency of a person or thing; “it is not regarded as one of his more memorable works”; “the symphony was hailed as an ingenious work”; “he was indebted to the pioneering work of John Dewey”; “the work of an active imagination”; “erosion is the work of wind or water over time”

Well as you can see, the original definition of this phrase was meant for something that was produced but not quite finished.  So yes you can throw something out there just to get a feel for its potential.

But you see there always has to be some work involved, some effort or activity as you see in the definition stated above.

So in any work in progress, there has to be some work involved. You just can’t put something out there without some type of real effort that results in some type of quality product.

Many people are afraid of the work part of the equation.  And why is that?

Because no one wants to go through all the work it takes to get something done only to see it fail. It’s everyone’s nightmare right?

See… Here’s where the comfort zone of having that  9 to 5 job gets in the way of a lot of people’s progress. They know that no matter what happens on their job… If they work good enough for two weeks that check will come rolling in.

It’s a block that really kills us so that we stay comfortable with that mentality. It’s easy and it’s a known fact.

But with anything else there’s the unknown. No one knows what will really happen from the work that we do in any other case.  It’s another mystery right? At least till you do it!

You have to work on it till it’s no longer an unknown to you. Otherwise nothing will change right?

So let’s stop mishandling this phrase and really do the work. And even if you have to present your product, service or your personal mission to everyone as a work in progress, at least it will be quality work. Yes?

Let’s do some real work so that there’s some real progress. Don’t wait another day. This is not hard. Unshelled. I’m out…
