I can recall a time when I had a job that was just killing me emotionally. I mean, I was just numb coming into work every day. And there may have been a couple of jobs like this in my lifetime…want to know what that job was?
Customer Service in the Call Center Environment. Awful.
I would come in each day in route to taking 180 to 200 calls a day…every day without fail!
This routine sucked for me. It was only a matter of time before I would have to do something else. Mentally it was draining. Funny thing is that I did this for years. I finally was able to get into another position then another.
But THE COMPANY ended up downsizing my department. And the only position they had open to keep me there was…you guessed it, Customer Service!
So I was let go.
I had to pick up the pieces and find another job. Another one that was just right.
And it’s taken me years to find just what that perfect job or career or lifestyle is quite frankly. Even at the time of this writing, it’s not quite there but I feel I’m close.
This is where we have to draw on the mastery of the girl with the locks. Who is that you say?
Goldilocks of course!
Yes Goldilocks! She’s smart!
You wanna know why?
Because she always found something that was just right!
Watch was she does in the story of the three bears…
She goes out to play and gets lost in the woods. She gets frightened because now she is alone and doesn’t know where she’s ventured off to.
She then sees a house where she takes the risk to go in for some shelter.
She tries out some porridge. The first one is too hot, second one is mushy, third one is just right.
She then tries out some chairs…the first one is too high, the second is too soft, the third one is just right.
Then she goes up to find a bedroom. She tries the first bed but it’s too firm, the second is too soft but the third is just right.
The third bed is so comfortable in fact that she falls asleep…for a long time.
And we know how the story ends.
But why do I say she’s a smart girl?
Because she was willing to try things out till she found the one that was just right.
- She tried with every part of her routine to get it just right.
- She didn’t settle for the worst.
- She didn’t settle for just ok.
- She didn’t stop trying.
- She continued until she found her just right.
So that’s why she’s a smart girl. Maybe smarter than most of us.
Goldilocks looked for just right not just in one facet of her story but in every part. Her diet, her casual or work time, her sleep time. All had to be just right.
I added the casual or work time in the case of the chair which may or may not be plausible for my point. But it sounds good anyway. So…
What can we learn from Miss Goldilocks?
I think you already know but humor me…
- You won’t settle for less!
- You need to find that just right spot in every facet of your life.
- Having a routine or a life in general that’s just ok will not cut it for you.
- And you won’t stop trying until you’ve found just right.
- That could be the job that’s just right.
- The lifestyle that you want that’s just right.
- Your health has to be just right.
- Your relationships need to be just right (which should include finding Mr. or Mrs. Right)
- The daily routine has to be just right!
Or at least you’ll die trying right?
Because then you’ll have more peaceful nights. Less stress and worry.
See…Goldilocks taught us something.
And she did all this in a risky environment too.
She was able to make these decisions in an unknown place which many of us shy away from.
Which is the last point.
None of this can be done without risk. There is a risk in trying things out, failing. Taking the risk again to try something else and failing. Taking the risk again until you’ve found what is just right.
I know it seems simple enough. But getting into the practice of trying, experimenting till you get it right is the adventure. Your journey shouldn’t stop after one or two tries. Your journey should always get into that comfortable space where everything is just right.
Be smart like Goldilocks.
Yes…there is going to be risk. It will seem like you’ll never find that perfect routine. That perfect space where you can really say Life is Good and mean it.
But that’s when you have to be Ol Goldie!
And keep pushing till you’ve found it. This is something to strive for and something that you must have in your life. Every part of it.
So keep trying till you’ve found it. It’s that important for everything you do.
So have you stopped trying? Are you afraid of taking another risk and failing? Comment and tell me where you’re at in your journey. Remember there is no reward without risk. So let me know what’s holding you back from finding your JUST RIGHT PLACE…and we’ll discuss…Cool? I’m out.
